Overview
This is the shorter of the two ¼” shank mini shaft series. It was designed by Manpa and tested by South Korean chainsaw, bonsai and ice carvers. It is 1-11/16” long, 5/16” diameter and a carving depth of 13/16”. It has a single miniature 3/16” (5mm) cutting head, rated to operate from 20,000 rpm to a maximum 30,000 rpm.
It fits a variety of straight die grinders with ¼” collets. These include compressed air, electric and battery powered, straight (not right angle) die grinders. There is a vast variety of die grinders readily available, and most woodworkers probably own one in their arsenal of tools.
DO NOT FIT this mini shaft on any of the following: It may fit but it ain’t safe!
- Flexible shafts, drill chucks or multi chucks.
- Angle grinders fitted with the Manpa Mini Collet ER or any type of collet extension. Angle grinders don’t have even the recommended minimum rpm speeds.
This incredible ¼” accessory, the short mini shaft with its powerful, tungsten carbide micro cutter makes rapid, small straight cuts to a maximum 13/16” carving depth and is best used in a push/pull motion as it bores through the wood. Each one can also be used for 1) rapid texturing across the wood surface 2) as a drill with a 5/16” diameter which can then quickly carve the initial hole out much larger or 3) to make pin hole designs in carving and woodturning. Its design use in small applications is vast – we’re just scratching the surface.
Interesting applications in wood are bonsai maintenance, facial and hair carving, infinite small carving designs, woodturning texturing and hollowing, sign making (letters and numbers). The carving applications we mentioned is just a start. You will find more uses the more you use them.
