This Hook & Loop (H&L) Medium Backing Pad is a 2” (50mm) diameter premium interface pad with genuine hook and loop material on the face. Though it can be used on the single, fixed speed Merlin2®, we recommend it is best used on the variable speed model which allows greater control with its speed dial. This allows you to control the speed up or down depending on your application. You’re able to fit all our H&L 2”, 2.2” (50mm, 56mm) Signature Series sanding discs as well as our complete range of Merlin Sanding Stars.
This medium pad is firmer and greater pressure can be applied to large, uneven surfaces. It is more like the workhorse of the two. The soft pad conforms to the shape of the wood or workpiece. Using both medium and soft pads help build even and contoured, convex and concave shapes easier.

- Medium and durable ½” (12.5mm) plastic construction
- Adds cushion and conformability for woodworking sanding applications requiring precision across uneven surfaces
- Increases abrasive cut and enables more consistent contact of abrasive sanding discs around surface contours
- Conforms to the shape of the wood or work piece but, being the workhorse, requires more pressure than the soft pad
- Allows closer sanding to edges for smoother, more refined finishes
- Backing pad fits 2” to 2.2” (50-56mm) sandpaper discs and Merlin Sanding Stars
- Oversize 2.2” (56mm) sanding discs and Merlin Sanding Stars fold and curl over the backing pad edge to prevent damage and remove scratches from perpendicular side edges
